Howdy, pardners... you folks oughta keep all hands, arms, feet, and legs inside the train, ‘cause this here’s the wildest ride in the wilderness!

On May 3, 2026, the iconic Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen with new magic. Guests can expect an exciting adventure on the tracks filled with surprises and thrills.

The story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad dates back to the early days of America's first major gold rush. Barnabas T. Bullion struck gold in the Big Thunder region and quickly formed the Big Thunder Mountain Company to pursue his dreams of riches.

However, Bullion soon faced struggles as strange and unexplainable events began to unfold. Machines failed and cave-ins blocked the mines, as the forces of Big Thunder fought back against the miners' efforts.

When the attraction reopens in 2026, guests on the runaway trains will experience how wild and unpredictable the wilderness of Big Thunder Mountain can truly be.

Big Thunder Mountain is a beloved classic at Disney Parks worldwide, known for its exciting story, thrilling ride experience, and memorable moments.

Recently, the Disney World version completed a full refurbishment, including installing new tracks and refreshed passenger trains, to keep the attraction in prime condition for years to come.

The updates were carefully designed to preserve the classic storytelling and high-energy fun, while enhancing life, movement, and detail throughout the ride.

In addition to these improvements, the attraction's height requirement has been lowered to 38 inches after a comprehensive safety review, making the wild ride accessible to younger guests.

New magic awaits riders as the trains travel underground to the spectacular Rainbow Caverns, a natural cavern glowing with phosphorescent pools and shimmering, iridescent stalagmites and stalactites.

Though stunningly beautiful, the Rainbow Caverns carry an ominous warning; a menacing rumble hints that guests might not be welcome in this mysterious part of the mountain.

There is even more magic to discover when Big Thunder Mountain Railroad returns to Disney World on May 3, 2026, promising thrilling adventures for the entire family.
