Creativity Meets Conservation at the Island Tower Addition

The new Island Tower addition at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows celebrates the spirit of conservation through innovative design and sustainable art installations that form the core of the tower’s concept.
Sustainable Art Installations
Inside the new Wailulu Bar & Grill restaurant, guests will find fish sculptures crafted from reclaimed fishing nets, designed to replicate trevally fish swimming overhead. A unique preserved moss art installation graces the tower’s lobby, bringing elements of nature indoors. Additionally, a Polynesian tapa cloth inspired by ocean wayfinding and made from natural fibers highlights cultural sustainability.
Rugs Made from Recycled Plastics
Sustainability extends throughout the tower, with rugs in guest rooms made from recycled plastic yarn using advanced technology. These luxurious, silk-like rugs are inspired by ocean waves and coral patterns with colors reflecting Polynesian beaches, enhancing the immersive environment.
Preserving a Historic Tree
During construction, a historic Ficus aurea tree dating back to Walt Disney World Resort’s opening was carefully preserved and relocated within the resort. The tree, including a unique Sabal palm growing inside it, has been part of many cherished guest memories and will continue to be enjoyed at its new location.
Sustainable Design and Construction
The Island Tower addition supports Disney’s 2030 environmental goals through efficient operations and eco-conscious design choices. Prefabrication minimized construction waste, while energy-saving technologies like optimized heating, cooling, and lighting reduce energy use by about 30 percent. The tower’s restaurant features the resort’s first all-electric kitchen, contributing to its certification within Florida’s Green Lodging program.
Opening December 17, 2024, the Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows invites guests and Disney Vacation Club members to experience a resort addition where creativity and conservation unite.
