At Destination D23, Imagineers shared insights about the new villains-themed land coming to Magic Kingdom. Announced by Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro, the land will feature two major attractions, unique dining, and shopping, all with a dark and devious atmosphere.

Disney Legend and former animator Andreas Deja, known for creating iconic villains like Gaston, Jafar, and Scar, is consulting on the project. He emphasized that these characters' strong personalities, bold visuals, and rich story backgrounds serve as essential references for conceptualizing the land's ambiance and guest experience.

The development of the land began with a deep study of the animation source material and conversations with Walt Disney Animation Studios artists. To authentically reflect the characters’ look and feel in the land’s design, Imagineers traveled to Paris and Barcelona. These cities' unique architectural styles became key inspirations.

The research focused on Art Nouveau architecture, which flourished in the late 1800s, examining its distinctive forms, scale, and colors. Working with local professors and art historians, Imagineers gained an intimate understanding of the architectural aesthetics that would guide the land’s design.

Paris showcases classic Art Nouveau with natural motifs and swirling designs that create an effect of nature frozen by magic. Barcelona’s Modernisme style lacks natural patterns but achieves an otherworldly and unnerving architectural appearance.

The team discovered rich color palettes in both styles, including colorful stained-glass windows and painted metals. These elements inspired the team to bring the deep jewel tones of Disney’s animated villains to life in the new land's buildings.

The team coined the term “Conjured Architecture” to describe the blend of historical architectural components with fantastical elements. This combination creates a wickedly immersive environment inspired by Disney Villains that guests will experience firsthand.

Disney Villains remain iconic and beloved for their memorable songs, elaborate costumes, complex stories, and striking visuals. The Imagineers look forward to sharing more details about how these characters are brought to life in this compelling new land.
